The installer uses FTP to upload a library named GENIE. In addition, it creates and uploads files to an IFS folder named /genie/. The default library and folder names can be overridden during installation.

The installer also creates an HTTP (Apache) Instance named GENIE and starts it. The default port used is 460.

* The HTTP powered by Apache server is included with the operating system of every iSeries/i machine. If successfully configured and started, you will see jobs named GENIE running under the QHTTPSVR subsystem. You can use the WRKACTJOB or WRKSBSJOB commands to find them. The manual commands to end and start the server after it is configured are:

ENDTCPSVR SERVER(*HTTP) HTTPSVR(GENIE)

STRTCPSVR SERVER(*HTTP) HTTPSVR(GENIE)

If the HTTP server is not starting, this may be due to an authority issue. A Profound Logic tech support representative can help you troubleshoot the problem.

When the installation completes, you will have the option to launch Genie. Genie is a browser-based product, so it will launch in your default browser, such as Internet Explorer or Firefox.

If this is your first time launching the product, you will be redirected to the Profound Logic site to activate your copy. You will see a web page that asks you to confirm your system information. After having done this, an activation key will be emailed to you.

Once your copy of Genie is activated, you can launch Genie again using a desktop icon or by going directly to the Genie URL. The URL for Genie is formatted as follows: http://iserieshost:460/genie/genie.pgm. The URL for the Genie Administrator is formatted as follows: http://iserieshost:460/genie/admin.pgm.

Set up Global Options - You can start by going to the Genie Administrator to explore prepackaged skins and set up global options. Here, you can specify how you would like to handle subfiles, function keys, headings, date fields, and more. In addition to setting up global options, the Genie Administrator allows you to control skin-specific options as well.

Enhance Specific Screens - The Genie Administrator allows you to enable the Genie Designer Tool for any skin. Once you launch Genie, simply start using your System i application to navigate to the screen you want to enhance. Then, use the Design Toolbar to activate design mode.



Once in design mode, you can drag-and-drop screen elements, change fonts and colors, add new buttons, organize fields into panels, and much more.

Create a Custom Skin - If you are somewhat familiar with HTML and CSS, you can quickly create your own custom Skin with your own logo, colors, and template. To do this, simply create a copy of any of the Genie Skin folders located on the IFS and start adding your own content. Once your skin is created, it will automatically appear in the Administrator.

Genie skins are comprised of HTML templates to control content for headers and footers, as well as CSS files to control default colors, fonts, sizes, and shapes. You can also add custom rules using JavaScript functions provided by Genie. Genie has examples of the HTML, CSS, and JavaScript code in the prepackaged skins.
