| IBM Completes Acquisition of Cognos |
| After
agreeing to acquire Cognos in November, IBM says it has completed the
process. According to IBM, it "acquired Cognos to accelerate its
Information on Demand strategy, a cross-company initiative that
combines IBM's strength in information integration, content and data
management and business consulting services to unlock the business
value of information. Through this acquisition, IBM and Cognos will
become the leading provider of technology and services for business
intelligence and performance management, delivering the industry's most
complete, open standards-based platform with the broadest range of
expertise to help companies expand the value of their information,
optimize their business processes and maximize performance across their
enterprises. The Cognos acquisition supports both IBM's acquisition
strategy and capital allocation model, and will contribute to the
achievement of the company's objective for earnings-per-share growth
through 2010. To date, IBM has announced 25 strategic acquisitions in
support of its global Information on Demand effort." Read More |

| Oracle Updates JD Edwards EnterpriseOne |
| Oracle
released an update to its JD Edwards EnterpriseOne Tools. According to
the press release, the new 8.97 version "provides an open platform for
customers to choose hardware, operating systems and database
technologies based on their unique IT strategies and business
requirements. Relying on JD Edwards EnterpriseOne Tools 8.97, customers
may also adopt current advancements in Oracle Enterprise Linux and many
components of Oracle Fusion Middleware." The new version has
enhancements to security, development tools, platform support, and
usability. It includes a new Server Manager, which is "a centralized
web console for the monitoring and management of all JD Edwards
EnterpriseOne server components. Server Manager increases visibility
into system operations for improved updating, configuring, patching and
monitoring activities." Version 8.97 also features "simplified menu
navigation, use of browser tabs, easier import/export of data on JDE
EnterpriseOne application forms and delivers support for the Firefox
browser." With the latest tools release, "JD Edwards EnterpriseOne
applications are enabled to operate in an SOA natively, without
dependency on third-party products. Design tools, wizards and reference
implementations are provided to help customers and partners leverage
these new integration capabilities." With the new version, users also
"can launch a complete run-publish-distribute cycle from a single user
interaction, output multiple objects such as invoices from a single
batch of data and gain the ability to produce reports in multiple
formats including Adobe PDF, HTML, RTF, Microsoft Excel and Microsoft
PowerPoint, XML and eText." Read More |

| Resume Building 101 |
| On
the Search400 site, David Vasta shares his tips for finding a job.
Because he has had to find work "at least 10 times in the last 20
years" he has sharpened his iSeries job-seeking skills. Along with tips
on peer review of your application materials and developing an
"elevator speech" about what you do, he offers a few resume tips. He
says, "Most interviewing managers are not familiar with your talents
and may not really understand what System i people do. Being too
technical with my resume has been a common criticism. Too many items
that, while important, will eventually make the reader glaze over and
bore them into placing my resume in a trash can. You can be technical
with the right person but make sure you keep everything high level. You
never see all the ingredients on the front of a box, but you always see
high level information about a product, so think along those lines when
rebuilding your resume. It's difficult to convey IT skill sets and
System i talents, so make sure you put them in plain English. My resume
used to be heavy with very technical items. I had to rethink those
items and come up with bullets people would want to read." Read More |

| The Big Day for V6R1 Arrives |
| After
lots of preamble and anticipation, IBM has finally launched i5/OS V6R1,
which is scheduled to begin shipping on March 21. On the ITJungle site,
Timothy Prickett Morgan shares what he's learned from IBM about the new
release. He says, "The very first thing that IBM is emphasizing in the
new V6R1 release is native encryption, which is important since some
applications running on OS/400 and i5/OS platforms but also on other
platforms (including mainframes) are still storing critical information
(sometimes credit card numbers, even) in an unencrypted form. Now,
support for the AES symmetric key algorithm is coded right into the
operating system, and can be used through two new features--Option 44
of i5/OS is the encrypted backup enablement feature, and Option 45 is
the encrypted ASP enablement feature. As the names for these features
suggest, one encrypts information stored on tapes that are made using
the Backup Recovery Media Services (BRMS) add-on for i5/OS, while the
other encrypts the data at the auxiliary storage pool level in the file
systems of the System i server. Both of these options are not freebies,
and Johnson was not privy to pricing information as we went to press
with this issue. The AES algorithm inside V6R1 uses the computing
resources of the Power processors inside the system to do its
encryption and decryption, and it cannot make use of adjunct
co-processor cards for encryption already announced by IBM or, as far
as I know, the vector math units inside the new Power6 processors. This
can, of course, change, and just might depending on how much oomph it
takes to run the AES encryption." Read More |

| Profound Logic Releases Genie 3.0 |
| Profound
Logic Software has released version 3.0 of Genie, which offers an
instant way to move System i green-screens to the Web. The new release
includes a new browser-based screen designer, new skins, and other
enhancements. According to the press release, the new screen designer
"is tightly integrated with the iSeries/System i server. For example,
not only can you change application fields to dropdowns, but you can
also tie them to database files to retrieve the dropdown options
without programming. Similarly, when you add images or flash charts to
your applications, you can link them directly to iSeries data, even if
this data does not appear on the screen." The designer also provides "
a simple drag-and-drop, point-and-click interface for enhancing
individual screens and applications. A comprehensive properties window
allows users to change all aspects of the screen and its element
properties, including any HTML, CSS, and Web 2.0 attributes. The
properties are conveniently categorized, and fully explained with
on-screen help. To use the designer, users start by launching Genie in
their browser, which automatically interprets their green-screen
applications and outputs them to the browser in HTML format. Then, the
user simply navigates to any screen within the application and enables
Design Mode to start enhancing that screen." Read More |
