AI Foundations: AI Training for IBM i Developers
Confidence With AI, Before You Commit to Anything
By Profound Logic
Your Backlog Won’t Wait. But Your Team Isn’t Ready Yet.
AI is changing how software gets built — not just how code gets written, but how requirements, testing, documentation, and production support all come together. For IBM i teams, that shift can feel like pressure to buy a tool, pick a platform, or bet on a project before anyone on the team really knows what “good” looks like.
AI Foundations is Profound Logic’s hands-on AI training for IBM i developers — a practical track that builds real fluency with AI before your team commits to any tool, platform, or project.
No prior AI experience assumed. No product to buy. No sales pitch.
What Your Team Will Learn
AI Terminology, Prompt Engineering & Context Engineering Training
Across three expert-led sessions covering AI terminology, prompt engineering training, and context engineering training, your developers learn what to say to an AI and what it needs to see to produce reliable results — using examples pulled from real RPGLE, SQL, and Node.js work, so the skills apply directly to the code your team maintains today.

Speaking the Language of AI
AI Terminology Training
The shared vocabulary every developer needs: zero-shot, one-shot, and few-shot prompting, chain-of-thought reasoning, grounding, context windows, tokens, hallucination, and more. Your team leaves able to read AI documentation, follow the hype with a critical eye, and talk about AI precisely with each other and with the business.

Prompt Engineering Training
What you say determines what you get. This session covers the anatomy of an effective prompt — persona, goal, context, constraints, output, and examples — plus the prompt patterns IBM i and RPG developers use most: explaining legacy code, refactoring RPG, generating SQL and unit tests, converting fixed-format RPG to free-form, and more. Developers also learn the follow-up questions that catch real bugs before they ship, and how to treat prompting as an iterative loop — prompt, review, refine, repeat — rather than a one-shot request.

Context Engineering Training
Prompts matter. Context matters more. This session covers what makes good context — business requirements, existing architecture, standards, sample code, database structures — and introduces context layers, from organization down to the current task. It also covers how well-structured RPGLE, CLLE, and DDS applications (service programs, named procedures, semantic naming) make AI dramatically more accurate, and how Retrieval-Augmented Generation (RAG), AI tools, skills, agents, and workflows fit together in real AI-assisted engineering for IBM i.
What Your Team Walks Away With
For decades, IBM i developers have been the custodians of the business. AI doesn’t replace that expertise — it amplifies it. AI Foundations gives your RPG and IBM i team the vocabulary and judgment to put generative AI to work, safely and effectively.
Confidence, not hype.
A clear-eyed view of what AI does well, where it fails, and why.
A repeatable method.
Prompting becomes a technique your whole team shares — not one person’s knack.
Fewer bad surprises.
How to spot hallucinated code and ground AI output in your real codebase.
A basis for decisions.
The vocabulary and judgment to evaluate any AI tool on its merits — including ours.
Three Sessions.
One Wrap-Up.
Three live 90-minute sessions over two weeks, led by a Profound Logic expert trainer — one module per session, with practical exercises in between.

Not Ready for AI in Production?
That's exactly who this is for.
AI Foundations is the first step for IBM i teams who want to move forward with AI deliberately — building real skill before they build real risk.
Frequently Asked Questions About AI Foundations
Get answers to common questions about our services
What is AI Foundations training for IBM i developers?
AI Foundations is Profound Logic’s hands-on AI training program for IBM i and RPG development teams. It covers AI terminology, prompt engineering, and context engineering across three live sessions, using real RPGLE, SQL, and Node.js examples.
Do we need any AI or prompt engineering experience to get started?
No. AI Foundations is built for teams starting from zero. Sessions assume no prior AI experience and build up from core terminology before moving into hands-on prompt engineering and context engineering work.
Is this a sales pitch for a Profound Logic AI product?
No. This is a training track, not a product demo. The goal is to give your team the vocabulary and judgment to evaluate any AI tool — including ours — on its own merits, before you commit to anything.
Will this AI training apply to our actual RPG codebase, or is it generic?
Examples throughout the sessions are drawn from real RPGLE, SQL, and Node.js work, so the skills your team practices map directly to the IBM i applications they already maintain.
How long does IBM i AI training take, and how much time will it require from our team?
Three live 90-minute sessions spread over two weeks, plus a short kickoff call and a wrap-up session. Practical exercises happen between sessions so the skills stick without pulling developers off their regular workload for long.
What happens after the three AI Foundations sessions end?
The wrap-up session covers open questions and next steps. Many teams use AI Foundations as the groundwork before evaluating specific AI tools, agentic coding workflows, or a broader IBM i futurization initiative — but there’s no obligation to move forward with anything.
